Topping the list of strong bases is sodium hydroxide, also known as Lye or Caustic Soda, which is a key ingredient in detergents, soaps, cotton products, petroleum, natural gas, drain cleaners, hair relaxers and, believe or not, food! This caustic solution can decompose proteins and lipids, making it an extremely beneficial cleaning agent across multiple industries. Yet this very same characteristic is what makes it so dangerous. Sodium hydroxide is capable of dissolving living tissue on contact, causing painful and grisly chemical burns or even permanent blindness if it comes in contact with the eyes.
