Fact 1 – In a survey conducted by Ask.com on American workers, ‘noisy colleagues’ cut to the top of workplace distractions list leaving phone calls and social media behind.<\/p>\n

Fact 2 – Another survey by University of California concluded that it takes about 25 minutes for an average worker to refocus on work after she has been distracted.<\/p>\n

Fact 3 – The Ask.com survey also established that despite wanting to work in isolation, between 27 and 39 percent of employees (depending on age) still preferred to work in an open-plan office.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0survey results<\/a> indicate\u00a0that people want to work in open-plan offices but don’t want to be bothered by its perils of frequent distraction and low efficiency.<\/p>\n

Enter Luxafor, a slightly impolite\u00a0but\u00a0practical solution to keeping distractions at bay and staying focused to increase productivity.<\/p>\n

A Latvian startup invented the device that clips onto your monitor and\u00a0glows green to tell your coworkers when you can be approached, or red to let others know\u00a0you are busy, much like your instant messenger\u2019s busy\/available\/away status indicator. The small gadget can also sync via USB or Bluetooth to\u00a0flash with the arrival of new emails and notifications.<\/p>\n

Luxafor is new on the market, but open-plan office workers\u00a0have been using other subtle, or even blatant, signals to ward off\u00a0chatty coworkers, like noise-cancelling headphones,\u00a0for example.\u00a0Luxafor’s inventors<\/a>\u00a0faced open-office issues that led them to put angry red flags and “do not disturb signs” on work stations\u00a0\u2014 something that probably sowed the seeds for a more sophisticated, commercial device.\u00a0Cubeguard\u00a0is\u00a0another commercial seller that keeps\u00a0colleagues apprised of your availability. And that’s not all:\u00a0some people have resorted to very creative means of indicating work status\u00a0like flags in flower pots<\/a>, magnets, and stacks of cubes.<\/p>\n

The project on Kickstarter still hasn’t gotten all the funding it needs, but Luxafor’s low cost and practical application\u00a0may make it suitable for just about\u00a0every open office in\u00a0the world.<\/p>\n
