Call the news what you will, \u201cexpressive, creative and embracing,\u201d or simply a purple patch: Pantone\u2019s official color of 2014<\/a> is Radiant Orchid, a vivid hue inspired by the unusual flower. Pantone has been selecting colors of the year since 2000 (that year’s hue: Cerulean), influencing fashion and design with each annual choice.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people have bought the grays and the blacks and neutrals largely because of the economy and wanting to play it safe,\u201d Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, explained to the Chicago Sun-Times. \u201cNow? They want to pep it up a little bit. It\u2019s a very complex color. Not only is it a color that speaks to innovation and has a magical quality to it, it also looks good when you put it on.\u201d<\/p>\n
