But for some, deciding which communal restroom to use isn&#8217;t so simple.<\/p>\n<p>In Philadelphia, transgender people, who often have to weigh their gender preference against how they will be perceived by the public, now have a third option.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/politics\/2013\/10\/28\/philadelphia-passes-sweeping-lgbt-inclusive-reform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Advocate<\/a> reports that a new law mandates that all new, city-owned buildings provide gender-neutral restrooms in addition to single-gender restrooms. Plus, city forms and websites will now offer options for same-sex couples and transgender people.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1315\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mydoorsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/braille-all-gender-bathroom-sign-se-5635_223.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1315\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1315 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.mydoorsign.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/braille-all-gender-bathroom-sign-se-5635_223.gif\" alt=\"gender-neutral restrooms\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1315\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Signs available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mydoorsign.com\/california-wall-door-all-gender-restroom-sign-kit\/sku-se-6071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MyDoorSign<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the new law makes clear, bathrooms are just one part of the gender equality equation. This overt sign of acceptance (pun intended) holds the most weight when combined with the other benefits finally extended to LGBT Philadelphians.<\/p>\n<p>While similar laws have been met with controversy as soon as they reach the public&#8217;s eyes and ears, the legislation in Philadelphia has, thus far, had a relatively easy go of it.
